When it comes to carpets, two civilizations immediately come to mind: Turkey and Iran. In this issue, we feature a designer who knows and blends both cultures exceptionally well. Mohammad Delasa was born in Iran and creates carpet designs in Turkey. As a result, he deeply understands and reflects both cultures in his work. Let’s hear the rest of the story from him.
Let’s start by getting to know you…
I was born in Iran, but I’ve been living and designing in Istanbul for many years. I earned my bachelor’s degree in carpet design from the Faculty of Fine Arts. I’ve been working in the field of carpet design for over 20 years. But my job is not just about drawing patterns… I have a design approach that deeply engages with the psychology of colors, the soul of spaces, and the emotions of people. When I founded my own brand, my goal wasn’t just to produce carpets—it was to offer a lifestyle and an aesthetic perspective. Over the years, I’ve collaborated with many major manufacturers in Iran, Turkey, and other countries. It’s been a journey that brings together art, architecture, interior design, and traditional values.
What does carpet mean to you?
To me, a carpet is not just a decorative item… It’s a story, a memory, an identity. In every knot lies a soul, in every pattern a story of the past. A carpet is not just the ground you walk on—it’s a carrier of warmth, peace, and style. When I design a carpet, I don’t just think about the pattern. Where will it be used? How will the light hit it? How will it harmonize with the other colors and textures in the space? These aspects are just as important to me as the design itself.
In your opinion, what do carpets and textiles bring to a space?
Carpets and textile products are the silent heroes that define the spirit of a space. They give a room its character. Wall paint, furniture, lighting… all are important, but a space feels incomplete without a carpet. With the right choice of color and texture, an empty room can instantly become warm and inviting. Since I also work with interior design, paint, and material harmony, I know this well: the right carpet brings not just aesthetic value, but also balance, harmony, and emotion to a space.

Turkey and Iran are the two most iconic countries when it comes to carpets. How would you compare their carpet cultures?
Iran and Turkey are the world’s two most renowned centers for carpets. Iranian carpets are rooted in a deep culture, delicate patterns, and storytelling. Every motif, every color combination has a meaning. An Iranian carpet is like poetry.
Turkish carpets, on the other hand, are historically very valuable and have undergone multidimensional development in recent years. This country, home to treasured carpet examples with exceptional harmony of color and pattern, has recently focused more on ease of use, modern demands, and global trends. This shift has made Turkey a responsive, innovative, and globally connected hub. As an Iranian living in Turkey, I try to blend these two cultures: merging the elegance of Iran with the practical creativity of Turkey.
What is a must-have for you when designing something?
The most important thing for me is to create a design with soul. A pattern shouldn’t be drawn just because it looks beautiful. It should have a story, a purpose, a feeling. Before I begin designing, I always consider the spirit of the space. I analyze color harmony on a psychological level. I’ve been reading books on color psychology for years, and I know that even a slightly off tone can throw everything off balance. For me, a pattern must appeal not only to the eye but also to the heart.
I believe that art should not only exist on gallery walls but also in the everyday spaces people inhabit and experience. The products I create include carpet collections that are both inspired by tradition and carry a contemporary spirit.
