Award winning brands in “Design Turkey 2014 Awards”, ındustrial design evaluating system organized in cooperation with Turkish Ministry of Economy, Turkish Exporter’s Assembly (TIM), Industrial Designer’s Society Of Turkey (ETMK) and International Council Of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID) within TURQUALITY program, were disclosed in a special ceremony in Haliç Congress Center. This is the 4th year of Design Turkey which aims to award good designs that are consumer need oriented, provides added value and competitive superiority to the products and promote benefits of good design to the society and industry and it was joined by Minister of Economy Nihat Zeybekçi.
Innovative and unique designs improve competitiveness and exports!
After the Opening Speech by TIM President Mehmet Büyükekşi, Minister Of Economy Nihat Zeybekçi took the stage and stated “I congratulate all the firms and designers who received awards. Those who did not receive an award can still try to receive for next year, the point is participation in this competition.” Zeybekçi pointed that R&D and successful designs shaped Turkey’s future and that innovative and unique designs in the products presented in the global market would increase our competitiveness and exports. He also added that “Our designers also design the future of Turkey, being innovative and different is necessary”.
With a total application number of 351 in Design Turkey 2014, winning prizes were awarded by Minister of Economy Nihat Zeybekçi and TIM President Mehmet Büyükekşi and ETMK President Ayberk Yağız. Firms like Koleksiyon, Arçelik, Vestel Beyaz Eşya, Çanakkale Kalebodur Seramik, Vitra Karo, Korkmaz also received awards in the home accessories category where Derun of Atlas Halı won “Best Design” award. With this award Atlas Halı also became the “First Machine Carpet Brand with Best Design Award” among mass marketing firms.
ETMK President Ayberk Yağız: “Industrial Design is based on Human”
Industrial Designer’s Society Of Turkey (ETMK) President Ayberk Yağız, in his statement on the values provided by industrial design evaluation system of Design Turkey to our country and brands mentioned that:
“Design Turkey, is a program that aims to reward “good design” and consequently encourage companies that invest in design. But industrial design is based on human. Therefore the main object is to provide awareness for the consumer on well designed products and added value to his/her life with better designs. Accordingly it is organized with the support of Ministry of Economy and awards are presented by Minister of Economy himself.
In addition our government has an object of increasing our current export revenue of 150 billion dollars to 500 billion dollars in 2023. It is clear that we have to produce and export better designed products with more added value in order to meet this object. Due to this necessity, Design Turkey is embraced by Turkish Exporter’s Assembly. As a result Design Turkey organization was created with joint efforts by Ministry of Economy, TIM and ETMK.
Design Turkey, first organized in 2008 since becoming a prestigious award system is one of many similar awards in well industrialized countries like Japan, Korea, USA and Germany. We are of course still at the initial stages compared to these countries. For the time being we are pleased with the most prestigious “Industrial Design Award” system we have created. But in the next ten year period we will try to close the gap to the other countries. In this respect there are many steps we have to make together with NGO’s (non governmental organizations), public institutions, companies, designers and lastly our consumers.”
Jury of 35 people chose Derun! If I were to buy a carpet it would definitely be Derun!
Ayberk Yağız, in his statement on Atlas Halı’s Derun (Petunya Collection) which were chosen to receive “First Machine Carpet Brand with Best Design Award” among mass marketing firms stated:
“When I joined Design Turkey organizational processes in 2012, there were ongoing discussions on whether “Carpet” products were industrial designs or not. Because of this, some important products could not receive award. It is hard to provide a clear answer to the question “Is a Carpet an industrial design?”. But as ETMK our main criteria was this: “There are 3 thousand carpet weaving looms in the world and 2 thousand of them is in Gaziantep Turkey and we can not ignore this fact as ETMK. With this approach we placed carpet products in Design Turkey sector definitions with bold letter. But we expected our firms to participate with not with pattern only products but innovative ideas. The firms delivered and they participated to DT 2014 with creative, innovative products clearly differentiated from textile and pattern designs.
Design Turkey would like to be a non commercial elite award organization. Only 65 of the 351 competing products could receive an award in Design Turkey 2014. One of them is Atlas Halı’s Derun. We did not have any influence on the decision. All the decisions were made by our 35 people jury. As ETMK we are extremely pleased to see an innovative carpet receiving a design award. We hope Atlas Halı adds more success in Turkey and in foreign markets. We are hoping to see them in Design Turkey again in the future. In spite of being a jury myself my personal opinion is this: if I buy a carpet soon it will definitely be Derun!”

Award winning Derun producer Atlas Halı General Manager Dr. Meriç Bebitoğlu also gave his view on the award they have won. Bebitoğlu stated that the award meant a lot for Atlas Halı family and added: “As Atlas Halı It is a great motivation for us to receive what we consider as the Design Oscar, Design Turkey 2014. We are also extremely pleased to be chosen the First Machine Carpet Brand with Best Design Award among mass marketing firms.”
Bebitoğlu mentioning that three years ago they started with a vision of “innovative” approaches and making a difference in the carpet sector that dates back 3 thousand years in the world and 2300 years in Turkey said, “After our market analysis and surveys we found out that our consumers expected not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional products from us. An enjoying view filled with deep meanings at home with “Derun”!
Derun that received “Best Design Award” in Design Turkey that is aiming to help improve international branding industrial design and encourage quality and value in designs is the brainchild of Atlas Halı Design Team’s young and talented designer Eda Güreli Şen.
“Derun” that has non staining and self cleaning features can maintain its original colors for years to come, reflects the effort of realizing that life is not only a superficial chaos and feeling inner tranquility beyond this chaos and carrying it to home environment. Colors of redbud flowers is joined by linden scents and past, present and future life of Istanbul is combined into one with a beautiful harmony in Derun. It provides a feeling of enjoying a tranquilly view of Kabataş over redbud and linden trees from a house on a hill facing to the Bosporus in Üsküdar.
